Apparently you can fly to Australia and rent a GS from the organizers there. So you don't even have to worry about shipping your bike.

Or wrecking it ;)

Do you happen to know what a trip like that would cost?

If you can spare a month or more you can put together a pretty good route around the outback.
I've not looked at the cost but I'd expect the BMW event to be on the mucho expensive end of doing this type of trip.
There's Co's on the east coast that rent bikes long term or do buy-back even, look at http://www.bikescape.com.au/ as an example.
Once you're set up to ride the costs are not much different to here I would think, in the cities gas is about the same price, in the bush a good deal more (but you've no choice). Camping's cheap or free, or Hotels (Pubs or bars to you) have single rooms for not too much.

Seeing a picture like the one below and saying, I've got to go there, got me started on my travels, maybe it'll light a fire under one of you guys ;)

According to a guy on Reddit who did this ride, the big advantage is that BMW provides support vehicles (mechanical and medical) so you're never SOL if you break down or get hurt. That's gotta be worth a lot if you're stuck in the middle of the outback.

My big trip across Aus went something like this (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Sydney+NSW,+Australia/Dubbo,+New+South+Wales,+Australia/Bourke+NSW,+Australia/Tibooburra,+New+South+Wales,+Australia/William+Creek,+South+Australia,+Australia/Oodnadatta,+South+Australia,+Australia/Finke,+Northern+Territory,+Australia/Alice+Springs+NT/Kings+Canyon+Resort/Perth+WA,+Australia/@-34.1219757,131.7511282,6z/data=!4m87!4m86!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b129838f39a743f:0x301 7d681632a850!2m2!1d151.2069902!2d-33.8674869!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b0f71b04ca4913b:0x50609b49 0442530!2m2!1d148.6094976!2d-32.2438146!1m10!1m1!1s0x6b00671dd4029055:0x40609b4 904403e0!2m2!1d145.9375458!2d-30.0901088!3m4!1m2!1d143.8070781!2d-29.710741!3s0x6af9212a994a5a41:0x26b9441e712aeda2! 1m15!1m1!1s0x6af6e30778d06e7b:0x40609b490440120!2m 2!1d142.0106962!2d-29.4292909!3m4!1m2!1d140.9965136!2d-28.9990176!3s0x6af4410f8ca28b0b:0x7f5416c1c841772c !3m4!1m2!1d139.0996202!2d-29.6963085!3s0x6a8d95ccd97bc9b1:0xba5a89302e2f23bc !1m10!1m1!1s0x6a9c92ad78c0b175:0x4033654628f2060!2 m2!1d136.3332456!2d-28.9000841!3m4!1m2!1d134.7398494!2d-29.0181978!3s0x2accdf782f45b911:0x1303365449624ee1 !1m10!1m1!1s0x6a86d84454ef8df9:0x4033654628eee80!2 m2!1d135.4477678!2d-27.5480766!3m4!1m2!1d133.2941333!2d-26.6830678!3s0x2ad62f1f65d5d379:0xd3acc0938661d102 !1m5!1m1!1s0x2b2b037a2444969b:0x40217a82a2542a0!2m 2!1d134.5798964!2d-25.5803201!1m5!1m1!1s0x2b321944be8f1331:0x50217a82 a254fd0!2m2!1d133.8806114!2d-23.7002104!1m5!1m1!1s0x2b32195e00222e69:0xc0ec4c08 bef10dac!2m2!1d131.511454!2d-24.250641!1m5!1m1!1s0x2a32bad5293bd573:0x504f0b535 df4ee0!2m2!1d115.8570118!2d-31.9535959!3e0), Google refuses to go some of the places I went though so its not 100% accurate.
For 90% of this I was alone, personally I liked it like that, maybe today I'd take a couple of close mates who could be trusted not to hurt themselves, but the big group thing would ruin it for me, so either the support would be the best or worst thing about it depending upon your point of view.
Most of the time you are on tracks where it'd only be a few hours or a day before help came along, so its not too dramatic if it does go pear shaped.
There's simple rules about phoning ahead or phoning back, so if you disappear altogether in a couple of days people will come looking for you.
The main thing is to not do anything too stupid in the first place.

Video looks great, but then it is a promo. Where ever they went on the GS's would be more
fun on a smaller bike.

Hope to do a ride from Adelaide to Darwin one day. Maybe buy a cheap DP bike in OZ for the trip and
sell when i leave.

Like a DR650 or XR650? I have a feeling these are cheap and bullet proof for a trip like that.
Or maybe a KTM 690 Enduro R if money allows?

DR400S or XR400 or even a 250 to keep the budget low. Something that parts
are plenty-full available for and cheap.
