Default Hello from the Canadian Rockies

So I haven't been to Japan since I was a little boy with my mom when she flew for PWA into Tokyo.

I've wanted to go back but with more of a twist. I've got random intel on bringing my own bike 2017 honda CB1100 into Japan and tour around. The timeframe is roughly 6-8 weeks is it possible or more just a pain and easier to rent?

I know its relatively easy to bring a bike into Europe temporarily which was my first plan but then Japan popped into my head.

    Any help would be great!

Rent. They have CB1100's here as well. The shipping of your bike alone would cost more than renting likely.

It would be my luggage system that would be the problem. Plus all the other mods I've spend to make her comfortable for long-haul rides.

Check actual costs and make decisions based on facts rather than conjecture.

CB1100 from 819 is about 13,000 yen per day.

Monthly rental is about 91,000 yen at this site....but their booking window is the month of March and they're all booked solid.

You can get one from Honda, prices depend on length of rental. For example, for a 7~12 day rental period it is 9,000 per day.

Hunting info on shipping from North America to Japan I find at least one person has done it for about $500:

That was almost 15 years ago but I wouldn't be surprised if shipping still worked out far cheaper than renting. Even if it is double that and you allow for shipping both ways you're looking at a couple thousand dollars. Figuring a seven week stay (let's call it 50 days) that who works out to about $40/day.

Get an actual shipping quote (googling turns up lots of shippers and Horizons Unlimited and HUBB should provide plenty of advice based on actual experience) for both entering and leaving Japan and then divide that by the number of days you expect to ride in Japan. See if it is actually cheaper to ship your own bike rather than to rent. The longer your stay, the more the balance tips in favor of bringing your own bike. You just have to figure out where the break-even line is and whether your stay is longer or shorter than that.

Or you could do what I'm planing on doing—buying a bike there and shipping it to the States.

I don't know if any of the companies have programs like Saab use to do. Saab would sell you a car, fly you to Europe, set you up for a stay at the main hotel in Trollhättan (where they made the Saab), let you drive it around for x amount of time, ship the car to the States, and it would still be less money than if you had bought it in the States! It was a really cool program.
