Getting this message a lot recently. Upgrading or just me clicking at the wrong time?

The hosting company is throttling the site. They say we are using too much CPU and too big a database.
Need to find another host as most of these companies expect simple home pages with virtually no traffic.

How big is the DB and what kind of traffic are you getting? Like you said, most JP sites don't expect the amount of bandwidth I think GR has, but then again, Amazon Cloud or similar might do the trick for a similar price and no restrictions....

What does your contract with the hosting company say about usage limits?

Hosting is a pretty generic service, and it should be easy enough to find a company with a suitable plan at a good price.

Database is 500MB. 24million hits in September!!!! Insane
Average hits per month is 11 million. Not sure what happened in September
but that blew the useage limits and since then they are throttling us.

They do not mention limits when you sign up. They arbitrarily apply them once they think you are using too much.
Now they say 100 CPU minutes per day and 20 MySQL busy minutes.

Maybe tell them to get bent, and look for a hosting company that sets out usage limits clearly in the contract. This kind of after-the-fact "we think you're using too much bandwidth" crap drives me nuts.

It's like "all you can eat for a dollar" and they snatch your plate away after three bites, saying "That's all you can eat for a dollar".

I get this error daily, some days multiple times a day. Oh well it's better the alternative scenario IMHO.

Maybe it's busy due to too many "members" online like these? (current sample)

still getting the message sometimes even though the chinese spambot filter seems to be working now. if you get it just click on the GR badge at the top and it seems to push on through every time.

Thanks for the tip, will try that, as I do get the timeout every day, typically in the afternoons.

Interestingly, when I was not logged in I got server busy error on four navigation attempts.
Then logged in and no more error. Make me wonder if vBulletin has changed some settings so
that logged in users have a higher priority ( probably not the case but interesting none the less ).

I'm always logged in, and still get this error frequently, but certainly less then before.

    i havent gotten it lately.

back when we had spambots galore i looked into what all the unregistered guests were viewing to see if it looked like bots. i was curious since there are often something like 120/20 unregistered guests/members online. from what i could see it seems that they are real people reading various pages and posts and not bots. i guess the site is actually pretty popular with lurkers!
